Scheme Operator
Looking for a new challenge? Do you have a set of skills that aren’t being completely utilised? Or perhaps you’re ready for a change in direction and keen to get stuck in and learn on the job… Join us!
You’ll be part of a small team responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of a complex irrigation scheme covering 28,000 hectares of the Amuri Basin, ensuring the reliable supply of water to our irrigators.
This role would suit someone who is mechanically minded, physically active, enjoys the outdoors and doesn’t mind working alone. There’s plenty of interaction with our shareholders so you’ll need to be easy-going and friendly, and naturally able to build great relationships while delivering excellent service. It goes without saying that you’ll have plenty of empathy for the agricultural sector.
While some experience with irrigation infrastructure would be ideal, we’re also keen to hear from candidates who have an electrical, mechanical, plumbing or similar trade background. A typical day could include screen and pump station servicing and cleaning, weed control along our races, mechanical repairs, managing water flow via a telemetry system or contractor supervision.
Working around water is a significant part of this role so we’re big on managing risk. You’ll need to get on board with our health and safety procedures and help us continue to improve!
If all this spins your wheels, but you’re lacking the experience, get in touch anyway as full training could be provided for someone demonstrating the enthusiasm and nous we’re looking for.
Our Operations team are required to be on call on a rostered basis which includes some weekend work, so you’ll need to be flexible with work hours over the irrigation season.
You’ll have:
The ability to work in New Zealand
Practical understanding of mechanical principles
Physical fitness
Quick uptake of new software systems
A can-do attitude
A full NZ Drivers License – 4WD experience would be a bonus
What we offer:
A competitive remuneration package
Interesting and varied work
Upskilling opportunities
A small, friendly and collaborative team
Regular social occasions
An espresso machine and a cupboard full of chocolate biscuits
A company that cares about the wellbeing and success of our people
We’re fans of living in the Basin:
Absolutely no traffic jams (not even a traffic light)
Waipara vineyards, Hanmer Springs hot pools, Mt Lyford ski field, the Hurunui lakes are all just minutes away
Hiking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, bungy jumping, jet boating, golf courses on your doorstep
Regular events such as the Hanmer Springs Fete, Hurunui Garden Festival, North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival, The Bandquet and Fire & Feast, to name just a few
